A Clinical Study of Postoperative Intraabdominal Abscesses



Abstract
This report is a retropective study of 40 patients with postoperative intraabdominal abscesses who underwent abdominal surgery due to tvarious causes in Departemtn of General Surgery in Shinchon and Incheon Severance hospital during a 5 year
period
from
January 1985 to December 1990 and following results were obtained.
1) the most common age grou was in the 7th decade and the male to female ratio was 1.5:1.
2) The common previous surgeries were appendectomy (32.5%), gastroduodenal surgery( 22.5%) and large bowel surgery (15%).
3) The most common duration between the previous operation and symptom onset were within 1 week (42.5%).
4) The most common symptoms and signs were fever and chillness (92.5%), localized tenderness (95%) and abdominal pain (70%).
5) The most common anatomical location of the abscess was intraperitoneal which included the pelvic cavity (37.5%), subhepatc space (32.5%) and subphrenic space (30%).
6) Positive culture for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria was obtained in 39 our of 40 cases (97.5%) and E. coli (57.5%) and pseudomonas (27.5%) were the most common organisms.
7) The methods of treatment were operative drainage (47.5%) and nonoperative percultaneous drainager (30%).
8) The over-all mortality was 25% and the causes of death were sepsis and multiple organ failure.
